v1.3:

Oliverb

Clouds Parasite is an alternative firmware for Clouds. It adds several features and enhancements to the stock firmware provided by Mutable Instruments.

Today, I will demonstrate an additional mode, that turns the whole module into a reverb. I like to call it the OliVerb.

To access it, first download the .wav file on the Parasites' website linked below, and play it to your module as described in the manual. Once this is done, long-press on the Blend button, then press it again until only the first LED is unlit.

This is the dry sound we will be working with. The Dry/Wet control crossfades between the dry sound and the reverberated sound.

The Size knob controls the size of the room, from a tiny room… to a huge hall.

The Density knob controls the decay, or the length of the reverb tail. Past a certain value, the decay is infinite, the reverb even amplifies the sound, which means that it will sustains forever, even if we pull out the input.

Whatever the density is, the Freeze knob will try to sustain the current sound as long as possible.

The Position knob sets the length of the pre-delay, which simulates the time it take for the sound to first hit the wall. It gives the ear a good sense of distance. Feeding a clock to the Trig input will synchronize this pre-delay time to a multiple or divisor of the clock, set by the Position knob.

The Texture knob modifies the quality of the the reverb tail, from a full, diffuse texture to a simpler echo-like sound, akin to a multi-tap delay. In this case, the Density knob acts roughly as a feedback control.

Optionally, each time the sound hits a wall, it can be pitch-shifted by a certain amount of semitones. The Pitch knob controls this amount. The longer the decay, the stronger the effect: here we can clearly hear the raising pitches. Setting the pitch to the maximum, +12 semitones, we recreate an approximation of the classic shimmer reverb effect. Note that the Size affects the quality of the pitch-shifting.

The second blend mode, called Stereo spread in the manual, controls the color of the reverb: at 12 o'clock, it is bright and neutral. Counter-clockwise, it becomes more and more dampened, simulating non-refecting wall materials, like wood. Clockwise, low frequency are more and more discarded, simulating… nothing.

The OliVerb finally features an internal random modulation section: 12 internal random LFOs modulate all the internal delay times, for weird effects and ghost notes.

The rate of the modulations is controlled by the 3rd blend mode, called Feedback in the manual. It has no effect until we increase the amount of modulation, which is controlled by the 4th blend mode, called Reverb in the manual.

At slow rates and high amounts of modulation, the OliVerb will produce uncommon, sustained pitched sounds. Let me try to chase them to conclude this demonstration.

Resonestor

Clouds Parasite is an alternative firmware for Clouds. It adds several features and enhancements to the stock firmware provided by Mutable Instruments.

Version 1.2 has a new mode: Resonestor. It is a polyphonic resonator effect, with support for synthesis of plucked strings, and more.

To access it, first download the .wav file on the Parasites' website linked below, and play it to your module as described in the manual. Once this is done, long-press on the Blend button, then press it again until only the second LED is unlit.

This is the dry sound we will be working with. If we set the Dry/Wet all the way to wet, and increase the decay (controlled by the Density knob), we will start to hear it resonate, up to infinite decay.

The Pitch knob sets the pitch of the resonance. You can play tuned melodies through the 1V/Oct input.

Because the sound such comb filters is very metallic and raw, there are filters into the feedback loop to attenuate extreme frequencies. The Texture knob sets this attenuation. At noon, no filtering is applied. Counter-clockwise is an increasingly low-pass filter, and clockwise is an increasingly resonant band-pass filter.

This setup is the basis of a well-known synthesis technique for plucked strings, the Karplus-Strong algorithm, where a short burst of noise "excites" the resonator. In Resonestor, the short burst can be produced internally; in this case, an input is not necessary. Feed a trigger to the Trig input. The Position knob determines the timbre of the burst: from long and dampened to short and bright. It more-or-less simulates the plucking position on the string.

The third Blend mode can allow only some of the overtones to ring, simulating the effect of playing harmonics, say, on a guitar.

Actually, there are four parts playing in unison at the moment. With the Size knob, you can detune them… and make them play various chords.

On a string instrument, it is rare that the strings are struck at the very same time: there is always a small delay between each striking. The fourth Blend mode sets the amount of random delay before each of the resonators are excited. With this, you can make Nestor sound like a sloppy guitar player.

The acute listener will have noticed that two strings resonate simultaneously here. In fact, the mode comprises two identical voices, only one of which is active at any time. Each time a trigger is received, the active voice changes. All the parameters control only the currently active voice.

When you enable Freeze, this voice switching is inhibited. Together with infinite decay, this allows you to make long drones on one channel, and use the other one for plucked melodies.

The second Blend mode sets how the resonators are mapped to the outputs. At noon, it is monophonic. CCW, each voice is assigned a separate output, for separate processing. CW, the four parts of each voices are spread on both output, for a pleasant stereo effect.

Note that at any time, the inputs are still fed to the resonators, so you can combine techniques.

Frames Parasite v1.0: an alternative firmware for MI Frames

Hi,

Here is a proper announcement for the release of [b]Frames Parasite[/b]. A parasite is an organism living in or on another, benefiting unilaterally from its host. [b]Parasites[/b] is a series of free alternative firmwares for MI modules. Their purpose is to enhance existing features, add new function and hidden modes, retaining as much as possible factory functionality. You might have heard of [url=https://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=136287]Clouds Parasite[/url].

Frames Parasite [url=https://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=128684]was announced before[/url]. This is basically the same version, with only a few changes. It adds the following features to the module: [*] a new Sequencer step edition mode to easily enter sequences in sequencer mode. [*] a new Shift Register sequencer mode that turns Frames into an advanced random canon generator.

All features of the official firmware are left untouched and still accessible as before.
